Like last year, National University of Singapore and the University of Hong Kong retained their first and second positions, respectively. Jumping one place from last year, IISc was ranked at 33 this year. “IISc’s success is partly due to its highly impactful research and it achieved the perfect weightage score for papers per faculty,” read a statement issued by QS.
Following closely are IIT-Mumbai (35th), IIT-Delhi (36th), IIT-Madras (43rd) and IIT-Kanpur (48th). Both IIT-Madras and IIT-Kanpur jumped 13 and 10 places, respectively, to be ranked among the top 50 universities.
Two more IITs – Roorkee (78) and Guwahati (94) – figure among the top 100. Both Delhi University and University of Calcutta have also done well. While DU jumped from 91 to 66 on the list, CU took the 108th place. Last year, it was ranked 149. Two Indian universities that debuted in the list this year are Amrita University and Andhra University.
A few other Indian universities to make it to the list are University of Mumbai, Banaras Hindu University, Panjab University, Amity University and Manipal Academy of Higher Education, among others.
"India's performance as a nation is the fifth best of the 17 countries featured in the rankings. With 23 universities, it is outperformed by Taiwan (34), South Korea (54), Japan (72), and China (82)," stated a press press release by QS.
