Christina Grimmie, a 22-year-old singer known for competing on NBC’s The Voice, died after being shot at a concert venue in Orlando, Florida, on Friday night, reported the Associated Press. Her publicist Heather Walsh said in an email on Saturday, “We can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord.”
Grimmie and the band Before You Exit were signing autographs and selling merchandise after their show at the Plaza Live Theater when a man walked up to her and shot her. She was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center where she died a few hours later, said Orlando Police spokeswoman Wanda Ford. Grimmie was the last to perform before the show wrapped up.
The man, armed with two guns, shot himself dead after Grimmie’s brother tackled him. No one else was injured. Police have not yet named the shooter.
A resident of New Jersey, Grimmie started out as a YouTube artiste. She took part in the sixth season of The Voice in 2014 and finished third. She was recently working on an album signed under the label Island Records.
