Two police officers were killed by militants in Jammu & Kashmir's Anantnag town on Saturday, reported The Indian Express. The ultras attacked a police checkpost in the south Kashmir district and an assistant sub-inspector and a police constable died in the fire exchange. “Militants fired on policemen deployed near the bus station at close range. Police also opened fire on the militants. Two policemen, including an officer, were killed in the attack,” a senior police officer told the English daily.
The attack took place merely only hours after three Border Security Force personnel were killed after their convoy was ambushed in nearby Bijbehara. According to people present near the spot, AK-47-wielding terrorists attacked the checkpost around 11.15 am. Police have identified the attackers, and they are looking for the perpetrators. The district is going for polls on June 22.
Director General of BSF KK Sharma said intelligence reports suggest that a large number of militants are waiting across the border to infiltrate India, reported PTI. “We are in the process of strengthening our fences and borders through induction of newer technology and integration of the ones that already exist. Hopefully, the borders are going to become nearly impregnable,” he said, adding that the force has inputs about an attack being planned to disrupt the Amarnath Yatra. “We are ready for the task as we have done in the past. I want to assure that this yatra will be incident free,“ he said.
