A 17-year-old student committed suicide in Kota, Rajasthan, on Tuesday, making it the 10th such case this year in the town, which is a hub for coaching institutes for competitive exams. Nirmal Yogi was enrolled with Resonance, one such institute, and was preparing for the entrance exam to the Indian Institute of Technology. According to the police, the sweeper at his rented accommodation discovered his body on Tuesday morning.

The boy’s relatives said he had recently fared poorly in a test at his coaching class, though no suicide note was found. Yogi was from a village in Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan.

The high number of suicides in Kota has worried local authorities, with 30 cases being registered in 2015 and 10 already this year. In April, a 16-year-old girl jumped to her death after being disappointed by her score in the IIT-JEE Mains. She had been preparing for the exam for two years. Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh has called for a body to regulate the coaching institutes and think of ways to reduce the pressure on students.
