Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday ruled out sabotage being the cause of the massive fire at a central ammunition depot in Pulgaon, Maharashtra, in which at least 20 people were killed and 15 others were injured. Parrikar said the exact cause of the fire will be known only after a complete inquiry is conducted, adding that it is too early to speculate, reported PTI.
After visiting the site, the defence minister also said that 130 tonnes of anti-tank mines were destroyed in the fire, adding that the people who lost their lives trying to douse the fire succeeded in saving the ammunition stored in nine other sheds. Earlier, a special investigation team was formed to look into the incident.
The Pulgaon depot is the biggest ammunition reserve in the country and caters to all the western forces in India. It stores a massive range of weapons including BrahMos missiles, the English daily said.
