Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman is set to receive Japan's prestigious award, Grand Fukuoka Prize 2016, for his contribution to Asian culture through music, reported PTI. He will receive the award alongside Philippines’ historian Ameth R Ocampo and Pakistan's Yasmeen Lari.
Ocampo has been chosen for the Academic Prize, while Lari for the award in the Arts and Culture section. Japan started conferring the annual award in 1990 to honour individuals, groups and organisations, whose work has had a significant influence in the preservation and promotion of the Asian culture.
Sitar maestro Ravi Shankar, danseuse Padma Subrahmanyam, historian Romila Thapar, sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan, Ashis Nandy, Partha Chatterjee, Vandana Shiva, Nalini Malini and historian Ramachandra Guha have received the award in the past, reported dna.
