Bengaluru FC moved into the quarter-finals of the 2016 AFC Cup, following a 3-2 win over Hong Kong club Kitchee SC on Wednesday at the Mong Kok Stadium in Hong Kong. They will be sole Indian representatives in the competition with Mohun Bagan being knocked out of the tournament, following a 1-2 loss against Singaporean club Tampines Rovers on Tuesday.
Kitchee took the lead early in the game, but a brace from Sunil Chhetri got Bengaluru in the lead. The Hong Kong club levelled terms in the 42nd minute, but an important goal from Daniel Lalhimpuia have Bengaluru the lead again, which they defended till the end.
On Tuesday, a second-string Mohun Bagan side slumped to a 1-2 defeat against Tampines Rovers. Bagan fell behind in the 62nd minute, but equalised through a goal from Bikramjit Singh in the 72nd minute. The match went into extra-time, before the Rovers managed to get the all-important goal five minutes before the 120-minute mark.
India's best performance in the AFC Cup came in 2008 and 2012 when Dempo SC and East Bengal made the semi-finals.
