The National Investigation Agency is expected to submit intelligence from the United States implicating Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba in the 2007 Samjhauta Express blasts. The move comes after several allegations that Pakistan’s role in the attacks were not investigated, The Times of India reported. The agency had earlier said former Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh activist Swami Aseemanand was behind the attack that killed 68 people in February 2007, though later the LeT was reported to be involved in it.
The US in 2009 had accused LeT operative Arif Qasmani, who is believed to be in Pakistan, of funding the blasts, and a United Nations sanctions statement had also linked him to the attacks. The report added that the NIA move comes after agency chief Sharad Kumar visited the US in April.
An officer told The Times of India that the findings from the US are not likely to be added to any chargesheet in the ongoing trial since it is already in an advanced stage.
