Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat has been asked to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation on May 24 for questioning regarding a sting video that had surfaced prior to the floor test in the state Assembly on May 10, reported PTI. The investigating agency had summoned Rawat for questioning in the case on May 9, but he had sought more time then.
After Rawat's victory in the floor test on May 11, the state government had asked the CBI to drop the case. However, the agency refused to oblige saying it was "not legally tenable". The clip allegedly showed Rawat offering bribes to rebel Congress leaders in the state for their support during the floor test. Rawat has admitted to being present in the video shot as part of the sting, which was conducted by a private news channel, and asked if meeting a journalist was a crime.
The Home Ministry had sent the footage to the CBI for investigation. The CM had also approached the High Court, seeking dismissal of the CBI investigation, but the court rejected his plea.
