The Delhi High Court on Friday dismissed a petition seeking the review of an earlier order rejecting a plea against former Commissioner of Police BS Bassi, reported PTI. The first plea, filed in February, had asked for action to be taken against Bassi for allegedly influencing an investigation into sedition cases filed against students of Jawaharlal Nehru University. The bench in February had dismissed the plea and said the petition was only filed in the interest of publicity.
The petitioner, Satish Pandey, referred to a statement by Bassi after the arrest of JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, in which Bassi had said he would not oppose the student’s bail plea. Pandey had alleged the police was “playing into the hands of some political parties under whom Delhi Police is working”.
The police's handling of Kumar's arrest and the sedition cases against two other JNU students had snowballed into a massive controversy. Kumar was arrested for reportedly shouting anti-national slogans at an event organised to protest the hanging of Parliament attacks convict Afzal Guru on February 9. He was released on interim bail for six months.
