A senior Indian Police Service officer, who had investigated the Ishrat Jahan encounter case, has been served a showcause notice for alleged "misconduct" and "unauthorised absence" from duty, reported the Times of India. Satish Verma was part of the three-member Special Investigation Team that had probed the incident in which the 19-year-old woman and three men were shot dead by the Gujarat Police.
The 1986 batch IPS officer of the Gujarat cadre is posted as the chief vigilance officer at the North Eastern Electrical Power Corporation in Shillong. The power ministry-owned unit has accused Verma of being absent from duty without authority and travelling without permission. He refused to comment about the development saying, "I am busy and I don't wish to comment anything."
In his report submitted to the court, Verma had said the encounter might have been staged. He had also raised doubts about Jahan's link to terror group Lashkar-Taiba, as has been consistently held by the state police.
