A Bharatiya Janata Party MP and two others on Monday fell into an 8-foot-deep drain in Jamnagar, Gujarat, after the slab that covered it collapsed. The MP from Jamnagar, Poonamben Hematbhai Maadam, was in Jalaram Nagar area to oversee a demolition drive when the incident took place. It is unclear what led to the collapse.
Maadam, along with a few others, was standing on top of the cover of the drain when it caved in. She has been admitted to a nearby hospital with injuries to her leg and head. Two other women were also hurt in the mishap and are undergoing treatment, News18 reported.
The MP was at the location following protests by locals against the demolition of 237 units by the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation. The slab gave way while she was speaking to officials and locals. She was rescued by fire brigade officers present at the site. According to a report by a local news agency, Maadam was trying to negotiate with officials, requesting them to give residents time to vacate the place, .
