Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis defeated the Russian pair of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 6-1 6-7 10-3 in the women's doubles final of the Rome Masters on Sunday. This was the Indo-Swiss pair's sixth title of the year and first on clay. It also ended a streak of losses for the duo on clay, after having lost their last two finals on the surface in Stuttgart and Madrid.
Mirza and Hingis powered through the first set and looked good in the second set as well at 5-3 up, before their opponents clawed back to win it through the tie-breaker. In the super tie-break that followed, the duo recovered their earlier poise to win the last six points, clinching the match and the title. The triumph came at a good time for them, considering the French Open starts on May 22.
