Women students at Jadavpur University are “below standard”, “shameless” and constantly seeking “company of male students”, according to the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s West Bengal wing, Dilip Ghosh. His remarks on Saturday were made in reaction to allegations of molestation by students last week during a clash between Left-aligned students and members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the BJP. The tussle (pictured above) at the university campus on May 6 was regarding the screening of the Vivek Agnihotri-directed Buddha in a Traffic Jam.

Calling the allegations baseless, Ghosh said the students had intentionally thrown themselves at the accused ABVP members, against whom police complaints were filed. “Those who fear so much for their modesty, why did they go there?” he said. The BJP leader further claimed that the allegations were an attempt to taint the ABVP’s reputation. He said the four ABVP members were packing film projection equipment when the Left students’ wing attacked thrashed them. “Now they are alleging the molestation. Is it worth believing?” he said.
