Jharkhand Police have arrested more than 500 people, including a legislator, after several incidents of violence were reported during the 24-hour bandh called by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in the state on Saturday, according to PTI. Bandh supporters set two vehicles on fire, damaged several others and put up a blockade in the Kolhan region.
Police said supporters also set a truck on fire on the national highway near Dhanga in East Singhbhum district. Police arrested JMM legislator Dasrath Gagrai along with his supporters from Kharswan. Party senior vice-president Champai Soren said the bandh was successful.
The party had called the bandh to protest against state government's recent decision on domicile policy. The new policy states that anybody who has lived in Jharkhand for thirty or more years for business, employment or any other reason and has immovable property will be considered as a resident of the state. The JMM wants the Raghubar Das government to consider the 1932 survey as the basis for the eligibility because the new policy does not protect the interest of the tribals, according to them.
