At least five people, including three schoolchildren, have died in flash floods that hit Jammu on Thursday evening, reported the Hindustan Times. Rescue teams have recovered the body of one of the school girls who were swept away on their way home from school, and that of a 45-year-old man who was also swept away with his son. Police officials are still looking for the 15-year-old boy.

The flash floods wreaked havoc three districts – Ramban, Reasi and Udhampur – leaving several people dead and injured, and destroying property and infrastructure. The district administrations believe they can finish the search and rescue mission for the school girls by Friday evening. “The body of one victim has been found, while efforts are on to locate the other body. Besides this, there are no reports of major damage to life or property. However, teams have been sent to few locations where damage may have taken place,” Rakesh Kumar, DC, Reasi, told the English daily.

According to police officials in Ramban, several houses and a few link roads have been damaged by the floods. "The exact extent of damage will be known once our rescue teams return. After ascertaining the damage, a team will be constituted to provide compensations to the victims,” said Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Ajaz.
