India on Thursday “strongly supported” the Bangladesh government’s anti-terrorism plans and also backed the neighbouring nation on its war crimes trials. The announcement came during Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar’s ongoing trip in Dhaka, where he met the country’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque.
“I told the [Bangladesh] foreign secretary that I am here also to convey Indian government’s strong support for the Government of Bangladesh in the matter of terrorism and extremism,” Jaishankar told The Indian Express. Jaishankar said the two countries would work “closely and bilaterally” to combat terror as it is an “issue that directly concerns us as neighbours”.
Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Vikas Swarup also said India supports Bangladesh in its efforts to bring justice for past war crimes. On Wednesday, Bangladesh had executed Jamaat-e-Islami leader Motiur Rahman Nizami for crimes during 1971 Liberation War.
