Trafficking, sex tourism and child pornography have emerged as a major threat to children in India, Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singn said on Wednesday. “With increasing access to information technology and the changing nature of our globalised economy, new threats to children are emerging – sex tourism, child pornography, online threats to children, among others,” he said in New Delhi, while speaking at the fourth ministerial meeting of the South Asia Initiative to End Violence Against Children, PTI reported.

Highlighting the government’s efforts, the Union minster said the Centre was working to create a protective environment for children by bringing all citizens under the purview of the Aadhaar Unique Identification number. The central government has established a national portal to track missing and vulnerable children, which has information on missing children, as well as on those who were found and are availing the services of different child care institutions, Singh said.

The home affairs minister urged everyone in close proximity with children to take the onus of ensuring their safety. “The biggest challenge is to identify and track children and their families, who are vulnerable, and reach out to them,” Singh said, adding that a large section of them were greatly affected by rapid climate change, disasters and conflict, as well.
