Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party has asked for a ban on unlicensed app-based cab services in the capital following an incident where a Belgian woman was molested by a driver in an Ola cab, reported The Hindu. Party leaders said that cases of sexual assault against women are rampant in cabs run by Ola and Uber. According to them, the frequent complaints clearly point to lack of diligence on the part of the taxi aggregators who do not conduct proper checks before registering a driver.
“The incident on Saturday night, in which a taxi driver registered with Ola allegedly sexually assaulted a foreign national highlights the danger of these unregulated taxi services,” said an AAP statement, adding that the services should be restricted till the companies agree to follow safety standards and regulations.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has asked for a report on the incident, even as opposition parties attacked the Arvind Kejriwal government regarding a spike in crimes against women in the capital.
According to police, the 24-year-old woman had booked an Ola taxi from Gurgaon and was going towards Chittaranjan Park, after which he allegedly molested her. The woman reported the incident to the police late Saturday night, after which Ola dismissed the driver.
