Khurram Zaki, a Pakistani human rights activist, was gunned down by four unidentified assailants in Karachi on Saturday night. Zaki, 40, was having dinner at a restaurant when the assailants arrived on two motorcycles and shot him dead, reported PTI. Pakistani journalist Rao Khalid and a bystander were also critically wounded in the attack, the report said. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
Zaki, a former journalist, was known for campaigning against religious extremism. He had led a campaign against prominent cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz for inciting hatred against Shia Muslims. He also used to run a blog called “Let Us Build Pakistan”, which was recently blocked by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority in the country.
Zaki was killed on the same day when the Karachi police said they had arrested a prime suspect in the 2013 murder of social activist Parveen Rehman. In September last year, another rights activists Sabeen Mahmud was killed in Karachi’s defence area. Her assailants are yet to be arrested by the police.
