The Haryana Police on Wednesday submitted its report on the gangrapes reported at Murthal during the agitation by members of the Jat community last month, reported The Indian Express. The Special Investigation Team's report was handed over to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which also heard the victims' version of the events, which were recorded by a local journalist. The court will hear the case next on May 30.
Amicus curiae Anupam Gupta, a senior advocate, expressed his reservations about the SIT's investigations. He said that Amrik Singh, a dhaba owner in Murthal, who had initially spoken up about the crimes, has changed his statement since then and gone completely silent. He asked the police why have they not been able to infuse confidence in Singh for him to speak the truth. He also suggested that the police should be stern with him, and if Singh is not cooperating, he should be "picked up" and interrogated properly. The assaults had allegedly taken place near the dhaba.
