Italy’s foreign ministry on Monday said a United Nations arbitration court in The Hague, Switzerland, has ruled that India should send back Salvatore Girone, one of the two Italian marines it arrested in a high-profile case from 2012. India had arrested the two sailors for allegedly killing two fishermen they believed were pirates.
Girone is still under house arrest in India. The other marine, Massimiliano Latorre, returned temporarily to Italy after suffering a stroke, but has not come back to India even though he was scheduled to do so in January.
According to Reuters, Monday’s ruling is an initial statement from the court, which is still reviewing the case against the two sailors. The two countries have been sparring over the case for years, but had decided in 2015 to take it to an international court.
