Jammu and Kashmir will soon get a branch of the Indian Institute of Technology. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the state government and IIT-Delhi on Sunday. A 625-acre plot has been approved in the Jagti township of Nagrota town to set up the institute, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh said.

The MoU, which realised a long-pending demand by the state, was signed by the secretary of the state's Higher Education Department, Hemant Kumar Sharma, and Director of IIT-Delhi Professor V Ramgopal Rao in Singh’s presence, PTI reported.

Singh thanked the Ministry of Human Resource Development for its support and expertise, saying this helped complete all necessary formalities required to establish IIT-Jammu in time. This, he said, will allow students in the state to pursue degrees in various branches of engineering and technology without having to travel to far-off cities.

The Centre also plans to set up a regulatory structure to make 10 public and as many private educational institutions world-class, HRD Minister Smriti Irani told the Lok Sabha on Monday during Question Hour.
