At least 32,077 women were raped across the country in 2015, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, reported PTI. "As per the information provided by National Crime Records Bureau, a total of 32,077 cases of rape were reported, out of which 1,706 were gangrapes during 2015," said Minister of State for Home Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary.
Chaudhary informed the Upper House that the Union Home Ministry has set up a victim compensation fund to assist similar schemes in states and Union Territories. The Narendra Modi government has approved Rs 200 crore to kickstart the fund. The figures presented in the Rajya Sabha only represent the number of formal complaints registered with the police, which means it would be safe to assume that the figure is much higher since in many cases the survivor doesn't approach the administration for a number of reasons such as stigma and intimidation.
