Mohammad Yasin Malik, the chairperson of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front, was detained by police on Wednesday, reported PTI. Malik was detained as a preemptive measure only hours before funeral prayers took place for party founder Amanullah Khan, who died in Pakistan on Tuesday. The outfit had termed Khan's death as an "irreparable loss" to the ongoing "freedom struggle" of the Kashmiris, reported India Today.
A spokesperson for the secessionist organisation said that curfew was imposed in various areas of the Valley, including Lal Chowk, Maisuma, Kokerbazar, Kothibagh, Abi Guzar and court road. The funeral prayers were scheduled to be held in Kashmir's city centre Lal Chowk. The JKLF said that all roads leading to the area have been sealed off with razor wires to prevent people from taking part in the prayers. According to Greater Kashmir, Malik had criticised the alleged lockdown, calling it “high-handedness” of police and the authorities.
