A massive fire gutted the National Museum of Natural History in central Delhi early on Tuesday morning, reported The Indian Express. Following the incident, Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar said he has ordered fire safety audits of the 34 museums in the country, reported The Hindu. The minister was at the site of the incident to review the situation.

The fire broke out on the sixth floor of the building in Mandi House and spread to the other floors. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce auditorium and FICCI headquarters, also housed in the same complex, are safe.

Six fire officials were injured while trying to douse the flames, which were finally brought under control by 7 am with the help of 35 fire tenders. Two firefighters are in critical condition at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where the injured were taken for treatment. Officials said the building's defunct fire safety mechanism delayed the process, reported NDTV.
