Kolkata Knight Riders achieved their fourth victory in the 2016 Indian Premier League season, defeating the Rising Pune Supergiants by two wickets at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Sunday.
After Rising Pune Supergiants were put in to bat, Ajinkya Rahane top-scored with a breezy 52-ball 67. Mahendra Singh Dhoni finished with 23 off 12, hitting 17 off the last over, lifting Pune to a challenging 160/5.
Kolkata Knight Riders' Robin Uthappa was dismissed off the first ball he played, while Gautam Gambhir ran himself out early in his innings. Shakib al Hasan was also dismissed cheaply and Kolkata looked in trouble at 60/3. Suryakumar Yadav and Yusuf Pathan steadied the ship with a 51-run partnership, before Pathan was adjudged leg-before-wicket for 36 and Suryakumar Yadav also lost his wicket after scoring a well-made 49-ball 60. Andre Russell and Rajagopal Sathish hit some lusty blows to keep Kolkata in the race, needing seven runs to win in the last over.
Piyush Chawla took a couple of runs off the first ball he faced but holed out off to long-on off the second ball. However Umesh Yadav hit a six straight down the ground to help the Knight Riders ace a thriller.
