A former student of the Aligarh Muslim University was killed in the violence that erupted on the campus as two rival groups of students fought on Saturday night, reported PTI. The students set ablaze the proctor's office, a jeep and half-a-dozen bikes. Several students were injured in the clashes that were finally diffused by the police in the early hours of Sunday.
The conflict started after a resident of Mumtaz hostel, who belonged to a regional faction, was assaulted and his room set on fire. The victim had gone to the proctor's office to register a complaint, when students from the other faction reached the spot and an altercation ensued. Students belonging to Sambhal exchanged fire with a group hailing from Azamgarh and a former student got killed in the incident, said DIG Aligarh Range Govind Agarwal. Following the incident, Rapid Action Force personnel have been deployed at the campus to avoid any further incidents.
