The Ministry of External Affairs on Sunday revoked businessman Vijay Mallya’s passport. The ministry has been consulting legal experts and considering having Mallya deported, given that he is embroiled in massive loan default cases and has been abroad since the chorus against him intensified in March. The Ministry had earlier suspended his passport and said it was considering revoking it in connection with the IDBI bank case, in which he is yet to repay a Rs 900-crore loan.

According the MEA’s tweet announcing the move, the ministry considered the replies given by his attorneys to a show-cause notice, as well as information from the Enforcement Directorate and a non-bailable warrant issued against him by a Mumbai court, before it made its decision. The revocation has been carried out under Section 10(3) of the Passports Act
