Sanju Samson and JP Duminy set a competitive score of 164 runs that took the Delhi Daredevils to a 10-run victory against Mumbai Indians at the Feroze Shah Kotla stadium in New Delhi on Saturday. This is the third consecutive victory for the team in the tournament. Samson was the man of the match. "It feels good to be a part of the team. Mainly when JP walked in, we talked about setting a good partnership. JP gave me great support. We are doing well as a team," he said.
The defending champions won the toss and opted to field first. The Delhi Daredevils were off to a great start, with Quinton de Kock hitting consecutive fours off the first two balls. De Kock, who scored a century in their last match, was out in the second over though.
Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson quickly upped the ante in the first few overs, with some tight bowling from Krunal Pandya. Iyer was soon caught out, followed by Karun Nair, but Samson remained steady and notched up a 50 by the 12th over. He was finally out after the 15th over, after which Jean-Paul Duminy made sure the Delhi Daredevils were not slowing down. He remained till the end of the team’s 20 overs, hitting 49 off 31 balls. Delhi Daredevils set a competitive target of 164/4.
Parthiv Patel and Sharma opened for the Mumbai Indians with the latter sweeping three boundaries in the first three overs even as Patel fell early while running between the wickets. He made one run off four balls, and was replaced by Ambati Rayudu. The Daredevils replaced Negi with Chris Morris after Indians made a roaring start with 45 runs in the first four overs. Rayudu made 25 before he lost his wicket to Amit Sharma's googly.
Pandya proved to be quite effective against the leg spinners Mishra and Imran Tahir making 36 runs off 17 balls. But they were quick to take over the game by bagging two wickets almost back-to-back. They sealed the match against the Mumbai Indians by taking three more wickets in quick succession and thus containing their score at 154 by the end of the 20th over. The Sharma-led team lost by 10 runs.
At the press conference after the match, Pandya said the opponents played well but it's a long tournament and they will bounce back.
