Kanak Mani Dixit, a noted Nepali journalist and chairman of Sajha Yatayat, Nepal's public transport bus system, was arrested by an anti-corruption body in Kathmandu on Friday for allegedly misappropriating a large sum of money by misusing his public position, reported PTI. Nepal's Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority had been investigating the 60-year-old on suspicion of “amassing property disproportionate to his known source of income”. The CIAA said that Dixit had been ignoring its summons and was “on the run”.
“We have arrested the Sajha Yatayat Chairman Dixit, not the journalist, to investigate his involvement in corruption,” said CIAA spokesperson Krishna Hari Pushkar. Apart from accumulating property illegally, Dixit has also been accused of depositing money at domestic and foreign banks in his and his family members’ names by embezzling the Sajha Yatayat’s property, the report said. The total amount of alleged embezzlement wasn't clear.
Dixit is the publisher of Himal and Nepali Times magazines.
