World football's governing body FIFA announced on Friday that it will set up a body to monitor the working conditions of labourers employed to construct stadiums for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, reported AFP. FIFA president Gianni Infantino said that the proposal had been welcomed by the "highest Qatari authorities", following media reports of human rights violations of labourers. Infantino also ruled out the possibility of the tournament being shifted out of Qatar.
During his first visit to Qatar as FIFA president, Infantino said the new body would be independent and tasked with monitoring systems in place to ensure decent working conditions for labourers. He added that the constitution of the body wasn't decided yet, but would be in place "very, very soon".
FIFA has been criticised in the past for not acting on the reports of human rights violations of labourers involved with the Qatar World Cup. According to a report, more than 1,200 labourers have already been killed because of Qatar's World Cup and up to 4,000 are expected to die before 2022.
