Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump both scored victories in nomination contests in their home state of New York. The wins, in one of the biggest state primaries so far, pushed both candidates closer to getting their party’s nominations. Clinton’s victory broke rival Bernie Sanders’ winning streak in the Midwest and West.
Networks in the United States called Trump’s victory just seconds after the polls closed, AFP reported. With about 80% of votes counted, he won 60% of the vote, while Clinton won almost 58%, CNN said. Trump’s rival Ohio Governor John Kaisch won about 25% of the vote, while Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders got around 40% of the Democrat votes, Reuters reported.
Popular liberal Sanders congratulated his opponent but was quick to point out that many voters in New York were missing from voter rolls. Around 1,26,000 voters were dropped from the registration list in Brooklyn, CNN said. However, Sanders is likely to have the same problem in the next primaries, which will be held in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island next week.
