Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reportedly visit the United States in early June for a bilateral summit with President Barack Obama. He is likely to address a joint session of the US Congress while there. This will be his fourth trip to the country in three years – he was last in the US for the nuclear summit earlier this month. A bipartisan group of four top US lawmakers said they had asked Speaker of the House of Representatives, Paul Ryan, to invite Modi to a joint meeting of the Congress, PTI reported. There has been no official confirmation from the White House or New Delhi yet.
Congressmen Ed Royce, Eliot Engel, George Holding and Ami Bera, in a letter to Ryan, said Modi is expected to be in the country on June 7 and 8. They said, “Given the depth of our relationship with India across a range of areas…. we believe this is an ideal opportunity for the Congress to hear directly from the Prime Minister.” They added that the US partnership with India is based on “a foundation of shared values”.
If Modi does address a joint session of the US Congress, he will be the sixth Indian prime minister to do so.
