The outstations students of NIT Srinagar have written to the Centre asking either Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani to visit the college campus and hoist the national flag to restore faith and confidence among them, reported PTI. The letter addressed to Irani has asked the government to fulfil 19 demands, including the permanent deployment of CRPF personnel on the campus, a reshuffle of the college administration, the formation of a Students' Council, the option of outside evaluation of exam marksheets and the celebration of national festivals at the institute.
Requesting that Irani or Modi "hoist a full size Tiranga in the campus at its highest mast", the students said, "This will reiterate the message that Kashmir is an integral part of India and students will have a psychological win over the anti-national elements on campus as well as outside." Among other things, they have also asked for an inquiry against people who are suspected to have triggered the recent incidents of violence on the campus. The students want the administration to pay for the medical treatment of those who were injured during such incidents.
They had earlier asked for the college to be shifted out of Jammu & Kashmir following continued violence and clashes on the campus that started after India lost the World Twenty20 semifinal to West Indies on April 1. However, the central government dismissed the idea.
