Delhi's Transport Minister Gopal Rai on Monday told The Indian Express the government is considering making the odd-even rule a long-term fixture, instead of just an emergency measure. In an interview with the paper, Rai said the government is "seriously thinking of enforcing the rule for 15 days every month" or even throughout the year, though they plan to review the scheme's success and seek public opinion before they make any decisions.

Rai clarified that if odd-even had to become a permanent rule, the government would need a year-and-a-half to strengthen the public transport system first. This would entail 3,000 more buses, a common smartcard for bus and metro systems, public Wifi and CCTV cameras, he added.

Among other ideas the government is toying with, Rai said two-wheelers might also be included in a later stage of the scheme. He added that people remained enthusiastic about following the rule and any opposition to it was political and led by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
