Dozens of people have died in floods in Pakistan, after heavy rain hit the northwest part of the country. PTI reported that 57 people were killed and 27 injured in flash floods, as houses were swept away in parts of Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir. The report also quoted a Pakistani national disaster management official who said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province was hit the worst.
Besides homes being swept away, some bridges also collapsed, including the Karakoram Highway that links to China. All educational institutions were shut on Monday, following the floods. The country is hit by extreme weather conditions nearly every year. In recent years, hundreds have died, and huge tracts of prime farmland have been destroyed. Last year, floods killed 81 people and affected almost 300,000 people across the country.
