Shahid Afridi, who led the Pakistan cricket team at the World Twenty20 tournament in India, has announced in a press release that he intends to step down from the post of captain, but wants to continue playing for his country.
After the 2015 World Cup, Shahid Afridi had announced that he would quit the game after the 2016 World Twenty20 in India. However in the lead-up to the tournament, he said he was facing "huge pressure" from family and friends to reconsider his retirement. After Pakistan's campaign at the tournament ended at the group stages, he mentioned that he would go home and then take a final decision.
However, Afridi might find himself dropped from the squad, especially after team manager Intikhab Alam and coach Waqar Younis provided scathing appraisals of his captaincy in the World Twenty20. During the tournament, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shaharyar Khan had also announced that he would not be retained as a captain, irrespective of whether he retired.
