Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh will be felicitated as “Maharashtrian of the Year” at an event held by Marathi newspaper Lokmat on Friday, IANS reported. Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis is expected to present the award. In 2015, Singh garnered acclaimed for his portrayal of celebrated Maharashtrian general Peshwa Bajirao in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani.
The award was instituted in 2010 to recognise individuals who have had a positive impact on the state and put Maharashtra on the global radar, the newspaper says. At the 2011 ceremony, actors Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar were felicitated by then President Pratibha Patil. This year, the jury included former Union ministers Sushil Kumar Shinde and Praful Patel, as well as top lawyers, filmmakers and activists from the state.
