Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party spent crores in an attempt to bring down his government with the help of the state's Governor, PB Acharya. His statement comes after the Congress government in Arunachal Pradesh was dissolved, while the party's regime in Uttarakhand is also facing a crisis.

“They wasted hundreds of crores before the Bihar elections to topple the government in Assam. They tried it by taking Himanta Biswa Sarma and other MLAs, but they could not do it,” Gogoi said at a press conference in Guwahati. He added that Sarma, who was formerly in the Congress' Cabinet before joining the BJP, tried to bring down the state government by buying 35 legislators. He also said the BJP was "murdering democracy" in Uttarakhand.

Gogoi's allegations come a few days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised him during pre-election rallies in the state. The Congress has also accused the BJP of attempting to overthrow their government in Himachal Pradesh, following the crisis in Uttarakhand. Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in Assam on April 4 and April 11.
