Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley said on Sunday that the Indian media is becoming an "agenda-setting institution" as against one that reports. Jaitley told PTI that the central government believes it should set the agenda and the media should just report. The Union minister said there is an overdose of opinion in the newspapers and news channels, which makes it difficult for a reader or a viewer to get the real facts in a report. He also said that the space for news on the electronic media is depleting.
Asked about the perception that the government seems to prefer one-way communication, with the Prime Minister never holding a press conference, Jaitley said that he and his government do communicate with journalists regularly, but "just as the character of the media has changed, the character of politicians too has changed". He also said he does not give TV bytes often, as the journalists are only interested in a comment to be run for the 9 pm prime-time show.
