An avalanche hit an army patrol party on the Siachen glacier in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. One soldier was rescued and but died in hospital, Army officials said. A second one is missing and efforts are on to find him.

An avalanche warning with a "medium danger" rating was sent out earlier in the day, and was to remain effective in the area for the next 24 hours, dna reported. The advisory was issued by Chandigarh-based Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment, which operates under the Ministry of Defence. It has been snowing heavily in parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the past few weeks.

Earlier this week, the army dug out the body of a 23-year-old jawan from under 12 feet of snow in Siachen. The soldier from Tirunelveli district was swept away along with another officer while on surveillance duty when an avalanche hit their post in the Kargil sector.

In February, 10 soldiers died after being buried in an avalanche in the Siachen region. One of them, Lance Naik Hanumanthappa, was rescued alive days after they were all declared dead. However he too succumbed soon after.
