The New Delhi Municipal Council on Wednesday froze the Delhi Golf Club's account with RBL Bank for failing to pay property tax amounting to nearly Rs 769 crore. Officials said the decision to freeze the bank account was taken after the club did not respond to the civic body's latest notice asking that it clear the amount. RBL Bank froze the account following a communication from the NDMC, PTI reported.

DGC was issued a notice last November to immediately clear the dues that had accumulated over a period of several years, but it failed to even respond to it, a top official from the municipal body said, adding that the club was informed of their move on Thursday. No DGC official was available for a comment on the matter. When the civic body asked the bank to attach and remit Rs 769.24 crore the DGC owed to it from the account, the bank informed the NDMC that the DGC account did not have sufficient funds.

The DGC functioned under the municipal body in the early 1930s, but the 18-hole golf course became an independent body in 1950. It hosts several Professional Golf Tour of India tournaments as well as Asian and European tour events.
