Mukund Padmanabhan was appointed the new editor of The Hindu on Wednesday, becoming the second non-family member to run the daily. In a meeting, the Board of Directors of Kasturi & Sons Ltd, which publishes The Hindu, came to a unanimous decision to appoint Padmanabhan, who was editor of The Hindu Business Line. The KSL board also decided to promote Raghavan Srinivasan to the position of editor at The Hindu Business Line from senior associate editor. Both appointments take effect immediately.

Early in January, Malini Parthasarathy, the newspaper’s first-ever woman editor, stepped down from the position after only 11 months in the job, citing “general dissatisfaction” with her performance, and said that she had been “harshly judged”. This came two years after a family rift within The Hindu led to the resignation of former editor Siddharth Varadarajan. Padmanabhan and Srinivasan were both chosen for their new positions on the basis of the recommendation of the KSL board’s Nomination and & Remuneration Committee.
