The Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to field former cricketer S Sreesanth as a candidate for the Kerala Assembly elections that will be held on May 16. Officials said the former fast bowler will stand from the constituency of either Thiruvananthapuram or Thrippunithura, NDTV reported.
If he contests from the Thrippunithura Assembly constituency in Ernakulam district, he is likely to be up against State Excise Minister and Congress leader K Babu. His family members said he received a call from a top BJP leader in Delhi requesting him to join the poll fray last week, PTI reported.
In July 2015, the Delhi High Court quashed spot-fixing charges levelled against Sreesanth in the 2013 Indian Premier League tournament. The former cricketer, who quit sports following the allegations, is now a busy actor.
