The England women's team prevailed over India in a low-scoring thriller at Dharamsala on Tuesday. Chasing 91 to win, Charlotte Edwards' team lost eight wickets but managed to reach the target in the 19th over, thereby recording their second consecutive win in the tournament. India lost their second straight match and now face an uphill task to make it to the semi-finals.
Opting to field after winning the toss, England bowled a restrictive line and did not allow India's batters to get going. Indian skipper Mithali Raj made 20 and Harmanpreet Kaur injected some urgency into proceedings with a 25-ball 26, but the hosts could only finish with 90/8 in 20 overs. This was six runs lower than the score they had achieved in their last match against Pakistan, which they also lost.
In the chase, England strolled to 42/1 in 5.3 overs, but then suffered a collapse. Some tight spin-bowling from Ekta Bisht, who finished with 4/21 in her four overs, ensured England collapsed to 79/7 in the 16th over. Harmandeep Kaur then missed a vital catch in the penultimate over, after which England's Anya Shrubsole hit a boundary off the last ball to ensure England sneaked over the line.
