Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the backdrop of the ongoing speculation over formation of government in Jammu & Kashmir. According to ANI, Mufti said the meeting was "positive" and that the party would decide on its next steps after a meeting on Thursday.

Mufti's visit to the prime minister comes after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Monday said the ruling party is committed to the agenda of the alliance that was forged by her father and former PDP chief Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who died on January 7. The state has been under Governor's Rule since then.

On March 17, Mufti met BJP chief Amit Shah in the Capital. According to NDTV, leaders in both parties said the meeting indicated that the issues keeping the two allies apart may be heading towards a resolution. Opposition leader Omar Abdullah of the National Conference met Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra on Monday and urged him to call fresh elections. "If the BJP and the PDP do not come together, I think the Governor should dissolve the assembly and have fresh elections," he told reporters after the meeting. In the 87-member state assembly, the PDP has 27 seats, while the BJP has 25. Abdullah's party has 14 and Congress with 12 seats has the least support in the House.
