Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma met Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday and asked him for assistance in the state’s ongoing border dispute with Assam. Territorial disputes between the two states have been a long-running issue, and began after Assam was restructured to form other states – including Meghalaya – post Independence. Meghalaya was demarcated by the government in 1972. Since then, the North East has been rife with communal tension, border issues, and separatist violence.
PTI reported that besides seeking Rajnath Singh’s intervention on this, Sangma also asked for increased security, the government's help in handling insurgency in the Garo Hills, and for forces to implement a National Green Tribunal order banning rathole mining. Sangma submitted a memorandum listing all of these problems to Singh and asked for the Centre to form a commission to define boundaries between the two states and put an end to the decades-old conflict.
