Former Delhi University lecturer SAR Geelani was granted bail by Patiala House Court on Saturday on a personal bond and surety of Rs 50,000. The court had deferred Geelani’s bail hearing from Friday. Geelani, who was arrested on February 16, was among those who had been arrested on charges of sedition. He had reportedly organised an event protesting against the judicial hanging of Parliament attacks convict Afzal Guru at Delhi’s Press Club.
Geelani’s family had earlier expressed unhappiness towards the differential treatment given to him, when Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar received bail after being held for similar charges. Kumar was released from Tihar jail on March 2.
