New Zealand all but secured a spot in the semi-finals of the World Twenty20 after recording an eight-run win over neighbouring rivals Australia on Friday in Dharamsala. The Kiwis have now won both the matches they have played so far, after humbling favourites India by 47 runs in the tournament opener. The Black Caps' win means that India face a must-win game against Pakistan on Saturday, who beat Bangladesh by 55 runs in their opening match.
New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to bat on a slow pitch in Dharamsala. The Kiwis then posted what looked like a below-par 142/8 on the board in 20 overs, as opener Martin Guptill top-scored with a 27-ball 39. Openers Usman Khawaja and Shane Watson gave Australia a good start, but the former's run-out on 38 off 27 balls was the turning point. Australia slumped from a healthy 62/2 in the ninth over to eventually manage only 134/9. The player of the match was fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan (3-17), who was added to the side at the expense of Nathan McCullum.
